The leather trucker jacket, explained

The denim jacket, in leather: snap front, chest pockets, waist tabs, cropped and straight. Why it works, how it fits and what it cannot do.

What makes a trucker

The trucker is the denim jacket pattern cut in leather. A snap-button front instead of a zip, two chest pockets with pointed flaps, a shirt collar, a straight body that ends at the waist, and adjuster tabs at the hem. It carries none of the motorcycle references of the biker or the café racer; it is a workwear jacket that happens to be leather.

  • Snap front, usually six or seven snaps
  • Two chest flap pockets, often with hand pockets behind them
  • Shirt collar
  • Straight, cropped body with waist tabs
  • Snap cuffs

Our Trucker follows the classic pattern in sheepskin nappa, with hand pockets behind the chest flaps.

Who it suits

People who live in denim and want a jacket that reads the same way. It goes with jeans, boots and a shirt without effort, and because the body is straight rather than fitted, it layers over a flannel or a hoodie. It is also the jacket that looks right open: the snaps mean you can wear it half closed without the front flapping.

How it should fit

Straight and cropped. The hem should sit at the waistband of your jeans, not below; the shoulder seam on the bone; the sleeves to the wrist bone with the arm straight, because the cuffs snap and do not stretch. Close all the snaps once: the chest should lie flat and the collar should sit without lifting at the back. The waist tabs give you a few centimetres either way.

Leather and colour

Sheepskin nappa keeps the trucker light enough to wear as a shirt-jacket in spring. In the builder, the cut works well in cowhide too; it was a workwear jacket before it was anything else, and cowhide gives it the stand and the patina that suit it. Brown, cognac and dark brown are the natural choices. Black turns it into a city jacket.

What it cannot do

Two things. It is not the warmest cut: no belt, no knit hem, and a short body. A quilted lining helps, but for cold weather the bomber or aviator do more. And the chest pockets leave no room for chest embroidery, so a crest goes on the back or the arm; the artwork guidelines explain the placements.
